Look to the future at Careers Day 7th Feb 2014
A packed morning and afternoon of presentations spanning five different themes, a dedicated CV clinic, and a presentation by the Chair of NHS England will be just some of the highlights of the BDA/UCL Eastman Dental Institute Careers Day, as revealed in the recently-published programme. Taking place at the University of London’s Senate House on Friday 7 February 2014, the event will offer foundation and newly-qualified dentists information, inspiration and insight. The day starts with a presentation on ‘The future of the NHS’ by the Chair of NHS England, Sir Malcolm Grant. It will be followed by a panel debate with the Chief Dental Officer for England, Barry Cockcroft; the Chair of the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee, Martin Fallowfield; the BDA’s Chief Executive, Peter Ward; and Stephen Porter, Professor of Oral Medicine and Director of the UCL Eastman Dental Institute. Alison Miles-Jenkins, from Training to Achieve Enterprises, will then share her top tips for a winning CV. The second part of the day offers delegates a choice of a wide range of presentations focused on five different themes.
Theme one looks at opportunities in both NHS and private general practice, as well as what is on offer for those considering work in the salaried services. Theme two consists of a series of clinical demonstrations covering implant surgery, occlusal assessment, aesthetics and composites. The third theme provides advice and guidance for those looking to build their experience working and studying abroad, as well as interview tips. Theme four provides more information on specialist opportunities in oral surgery, orthodontics and specialist private practice. Theme five offers insight into career opportunities with some of the UK’s larger dental groups as well as business presentations on tax, income and ethical selling.
Further event highlights include a dedicated CV clinic offering one-to-one advice from speakers at the event, an exhibition providing the opportunity to meet with potential employers and those offering guidance and support, and an evening drinks reception where delegates can network with their peers and chat further with exhibitors.
Delegate fees start from just £52 for dental students and are also significantly reduced for Foundation Dentists.

Bacteria in Unit Water Lines can cause infection
With patients and surgery staff regularly exposed to water from aerosols used during treatment, failure to ensure that Dental Unit Water Lines (DUWL) are clean can cause contamination, risk spreading infection and may be a breach of Health and Safety Guidelines.
The Health and Safety Commission's requirements, as recorded in “The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems - Approved Code of Practice and Guidance” states that all Dentists must identify and assess sources of risk and implement a scheme for preventing and controlling that risk.
Are you taking the necessary precautions to avoid contamination risk?
LLDC newsletter sponsor, Swiftclean - one of the UK’s longest established providers of Legionella prevention services, provides comprehensive solutions to the challenges presented by air and water hygiene compliance.
Don’t get caught out, it’s your responsibility.

Natasha Fletcher Weight Management Consultant
I work with overweight and obese individuals who are serious about permanently losing weight and leading a healthier lifestyle.
Despite good intentions, it can be difficult to make the lifestyle changes needed to lose weight. I work closely with individuals to encourage sustainable lifestyle changes. I help with diet, nutrition and exercise and provide support to overcome the challenges of weight-loss.
I help uncover psychological and emotional issues linked to weight gain and identify the causes of weight problems. This helps clients feel happier, more balanced and more confident. As a result, they are able to take control of their diet and lifestyle.
I also provide a “Simple Steps” weight-management programme for children to encourage a good diet, and exercise-related activities for a healthy lifestyle.
My clients are delighted with the positive changes they have made. They have successfully lost weight, formed a new relationship with food and adopted a healthier lifestyle. They feel fitter and have a deeper understanding about the causes of their weight gain.
An initial 45-minute consultation is free. To see how I can help you, please contact me. I would be delighted to hear from you.
